Hyper 8 Video System 0.22

Released on August 13, 2025

# Introducing Browse and Search

git 13

Visitors can now quickly browse and search all collections and playlists on a Hyper 8 site, directly from the header!

Screencapture of the dark variant of the interface with browse panel open.
Each group (collection or playlist) in the browse panel features a caret/chevron which signals
the collapsed/expanded state of its videos.

# New playlist sidebar and improved video page layout

git 5

Playlists are now also displayed as a contextual sidebar alongside their videos. The playlist can be toggled away, which is then also remembered throughout the session, so it stays out of your way if you want full attention only on the playing videos themselves.

Classic split playlist layout with the video player on the left side (bigger) and a list of the videos in the playlist on the right side (including thumbnails, video durations, etc.)
Mobile version of the split layout: On the top the video player, on the bottom the list with videos in the playlist

# Player outro screen

git 3

When a video in a playlist finishes, your viewers can now directly jump to all other videos of the playlist, right from the player itself. This also makes playlist navigation in embedded videos possible. Also includes a newly introduced "replay" icon.

A video player in which the video has finished. It is now showing a list of videos (the playlist), including thumbnails, titles, durations, release dates, inside the player viewport.

# Poster image cropping aid

git 2

In the editor you now have visual cropping aids that assist with choosing the right poster images for videos, and correctly framing text inside them (safe margins).

Poster image form in the Hyper 8 editor: Different colored rectangles
(pink, blue, image) are overlaid to visualize their differing aspect ratios
and how they are cropped against each other. Additionally there are textual
descriptions like "Video dimensions (9:16)" and "Thumbnail dimensions(16:9)"

# Fast image previews / LQIPs

git 2

This release adds groundwork and first integrations of LQIPs (low quality image previews), that is, computation of dominant colors from poster images to prepare extremely fast loading preview versions of thumbnails which are shown to visitors right until the actual thumbnails (wich themselves are also optimized for fast loading) are loaded. These LQIPs are now also prominently featured in an experimental layout element that hints at the videos in a parent container (collection or playlist) as small "bubbles".

Two lines - on each line the left side shows text, the right shows a varying amount of colorful overlapping circles.

First line: "Part of Faircamp" with 6 grey-ish circles in the tones of dark gray, white, dark blue, brown grey
Second line: "Part of /video" with around 20 circles, the ones from before plus a dozen more, featuring the colors black, pink, orange, turquoise and dark beige

# Shortcuts

git 3

This release adds a number of new shortcuts for accessing the new navigation system, as well as a new shortcut for muting/unmuting audio in the player. Additionally all shortcuts are now also made discoverable to visitors through a shortcut help panel that is accessible from the footer.

Above a video page there is a floating dialog with the headings "Navigation"
and "Video Player", each describing various keyboard shortcuts like for
instance "b: Open browse panel" or "s: Focus search field". In the footer of
the page there is a new link titled "Shortcuts".

# Trial for a new logo icon

git 2
A rectangular silhouette almost identical to that of a slide frame (a subtly
rounded square in whose center a landscape-oriented 17:10 aspect ratio
rectangle has been cut out). The silhouette is filled with a lush mesh
gradient whose color changes towards each corner (going from orange, to red,
to violet, to blue). Next to that is a white, horizontally aligned,
title-cased text in the font Rubik, which says "Hyper 8". The background is
pitch black.

The logo icon that has been in use so far was merely a placeholder. This new design is now a candidate (on trial) for Hyper 8's first official logo icon design! Conceptually the logo is meant to have a fixed shape, but might adapt to different color schemes throughout different versions and places of use (that is, different gradients, different solid colors, etc.).

# Command Line Interface

There is now a new --preview option for automatically opening the result of a --build command in the browser right after it completes, and Hyper 8 will now return error codes to your terminal when something goes wrong, helping you to build robust scripted workflows around Hyper 8.

Add --preview option for directly opening the site after building through CLI git 2
Let the application return an error code for all obvious error branches git 1

# Cache improvements

git 1
A glimpse into Hyper 8's .hyper8_cache folder, revealing a flat file listing with names such as:
JfDZQ4kdxgI.video_meta1.bincode, 6qDpNZr9wNA.video_meta1.bincode, uf6wp7Cx2gQ.poster_assets1.bincode,
fZF0hDok.jpg, and so on.

Hyper 8 now separately tracks cache artifacts of different types (computed metadata, resized images, etc.), greatly reducing the need for recomputation during future updates to the architecture.
